About This Project

Ancient Chinese Architecture is a digital museum dedicated to exploring 3,000 years of Chinese architectural heritage. From the rammed-earth foundations of the Shang dynasty to the ornate palace complexes of the Qing, our mission is to make this extraordinary building tradition accessible, visual, and engaging.

We believe that architecture tells the story of a civilization — its values, its technology, its relationship with nature and the cosmos. Every dougong bracket, every sweeping roof curve, every courtyard layout embodies centuries of accumulated wisdom and artistry.

This site combines scholarly research with interactive tools and high-quality visuals to create an experience you cannot get from a textbook or a Wikipedia article. We are building the resource we wish had existed when we first became fascinated by Chinese architecture.

What This Site Covers

Our content is organized around four interconnected ways of understanding the tradition:

• Twelve landmark buildings — from the 1,000-year-old Yingxian Pagoda and the Zhaozhou Bridge to the Forbidden City and the Ming Tombs. Each building page includes its construction history, engineering innovations, key dates, a practical travel guide, and answers to common questions.
• Six core architectural elements — the dougong bracket system, roof forms, courtyard layouts, decorative systems, materials, and vernacular housing. These explain the grammar that every Chinese builder worked with, from imperial palaces to village homes.
• Nine dynastic periods — from the rammed-earth cities of the Shang to the garden architecture of the Qing, showing how political power, religion, and technology reshaped building practice every few centuries.
• Comparison tools and galleries — interactive side-by-side dynasty comparisons, a curated photo gallery, and visual guides that let you see the differences rather than just read about them.

Our Editorial Standards

Every page on this site is built from verifiable sources: archaeological excavation reports, conservation documents published by cultural heritage authorities, classical texts such as the Yingzao Fashi (Building Standards, 1103 CE), and current academic research in English and Chinese. Dates, measurements, and attributions are cross-checked against at least two independent sources before publication.

We state uncertainty honestly. Where scholars disagree — for example, on the exact function of certain bracket configurations or the dating of particular tombs — we present the leading interpretations rather than a single oversimplified answer. When new excavations change our understanding, we revise the affected pages and note the update.

Photographs on the site are credited and, wherever possible, taken from official sources or used under open licenses. We intentionally avoid AI-generated imagery for historical buildings because accuracy matters more than polish.
